Akuzativ – Your second Croatian case

AKUZATIV

The accusative (akuzativ) is the most commonly used case in Croatian.

It is used to describe a movement (I’m going to Italy = Idem u Italiju.)

The accusative case is used for nouns that are objects in a sentence.

It used with the following prepositions: kroz (through), za (for), u (in, when expressing a movement), etc.

 

Ženski rod (f.)                                                  Mušrki rod (m.)

ŽENA – ŽENEVidim ženu. / Vidim žene.(I’m looking at a woman. / I’m looking at women.) KOMPJUTER – KOMPJUTERI – Imam kompjuter. /Imam kompjutere. (I have a computer. / I have computers.) – things in masculine gender, accusative, don’t have an ending in singular form, just like feminine nouns that denote things.
NOĆ – NOĆIGledam noć. / Gledam noći. (I’m observing a night. / I’m observing nights.) LAV – LAVOVI; Vidim lava. / Vidim lavove.(I see a lion. / I see more lions.) – some short nouns in masculine gender have a long ending – ove or –eve
RAJ – RAJEVI; Gledam raj. / Gledam rajeve. (č, ć, dž, đ, j, lj, nj, š, ž)       (I’m observing a heaven. / I’m observing heavens.) – as mentioned earlier, nouns that denote things don’t have an ending in singular. Since this is a short noun, it has a loner ending in plural. And because it ends with letter –j, it takes ending –evi, not –ovi)
MAJMUN – MAJMUNIOn ima majmuna. / On ima majmune. (He has a monkey. / He has more monkeys.)
PAS – PSIMi imamo psa. / Mi imamo pse. (We have a dog. / We have more dogs.)
MUŠKARAC – MUŠKARCIVidjela sam muškarca. / Vidjela sam muškarce.
DJEČAK – DJEČACITražim dječaka. / Tražim dječake.
*TATA – TATE; Imam tatu. / Imam tate.

– This nouns is an exception. It has a feminine ending, but it’s a masculine noun all the same

  1. a) Put the nouns in accusative case. (feminine gender)

 

Ivana drži _______ (čaša) u ruci. Ivana is holding a glass in her hand.

Tražim svoju_____ (prijateljica). I’m looking for my friend.

Čitam najnoviju ________ (vijest). I’m reading the latest news.

 

  1. b) Put the nouns in accusative case. (masculine gender)

 

Marko ima _______ (sin) od 5 godina. Marko has a son who’s 5 years old.

Oni traže ________ (ključ). They are looking for key.

Vidim samo jednog ____________ (muškarac) na cesti. I can see only one man in the street.

Ne vidim niti jedan ________ (oblak) na nebu. I don’t see a single cloud in a sky.

On ima jedan_________ (kompjuter). He has one computer.

 

  1. c) Accusative: Feminine or Masculine gender

 

Ja idem u ________ (grad). Trebam kupiti ____________ (cipela, mn). Tražim __________ (dućan) koji prodaje talijanske cipele. Ulazim u _______________ (autobus) i gledam kroz __________ (prozor). Silazim iz autobusa i ulazim u __________________ (dućan). Penjem se na prvi ___________ (kat). Pitam ________ (prodavačica) imaju li cipele s visokom petom (high heels).

Uspjela sam kupiti cipele. Zovem _____________ (sestra) da dođe po mene. Imam dvije ____________ (sestra). Zovem ________________ (svoja mlađa sestra). Sretna sam! Sada još samo trebam kupiti __________ (jakna) i _________ (šal).
